Day Trips

Badlands National Park consists of nearly 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest, protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. 64,000 acres are designated official wilderness. While you're there, you'll want to visit the world famous Wall Drug Store in Wall, SD.

The Buffalo Gap National Grassland encompasses nearly 600,000 acres and contains a surprising diversity of plants and animals.

Each August, motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world trek to Sturgis, SD to take part in the annual Sturgis Bike Rally. If you're planning to attend the rally, Hot Springs is a great place to spend your nights.

With more than 70 saloons and gaming houses, Deadwood makes an excellent daytrip destination. This Old West gold-rush town was once called home by Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. If you're not into gambling, the Adams Museum and House might be one of Deadwood's better attractions. The museum has one of the area's best Old West collections.

Located in the Northern Black Hills, Terry Peak and Deer Mountain each offer a fun-filled day of winter sports in breathtaking settings.

The Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, also located in the northern Black Hills, makes for a beautiful daytrip in any seson. The narrow canyon walls rise sharply skyward from Spearfish Creek and the highway sculpted along the canyon bottom. A forest of spruce, pine, aspen, birch, and oak covers much of the hillsides.

In nearby Wyoming, Devil's Tower is actually the core of an ancient volcano, exposed by millions of years of erosion. It is also a one of the nation's most popular rock climbs.
